Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) has announced that in line with the Company's commitment and continuous endeavours to ensure the development of various surrounding areas of Dahanu, the Company's Dahanu Thermal Power Station commenced construction of a water check dam at Saravali - Savata Village River for benefits of local Dahanu people.
Shri. Krishna Ghoda, local MLA, performed Bhoomipoojan rituals at the site of proposed water check dam in presence of a large crowd of local people and the Company's officials.
The proposed 100 meters long water check dam, which is expected to be completed by March 2006, will be having a water storage capacity to the extent of 13 crore liters. This will fulfill not only the drinking water needs of surrounding villages, viz., Saravali, Savata, Ashagadh Sogve, but also ensure continuous water supply through out the year for agro based activities as these areas see number of Chikoo orchards. The dam is also expected to prove useful for controlling and improving the diminishing water table level in the area, which affect agro production. The Saravali Village Gram Panchayat has already planned implementation of drinking water supply scheme from the stored water and is expected to fulfill the thirst of around 10000 villagers of Saravali. Considering the peculiar characteristic of area, i.e., water scarcity, the Company, in the past, had carried repairs of two water check dams, which benefited the local people on very large scale.
While speaking on the occasion, Hon. MLA, Shri Krishna Ghoda praised the Company and expressed his sincere gratitude towards Company on behalf of local people for Company's substantial contribution in the overall development of Dahanu. He also expressed hopes that the Company will continue to contribute in future too even more substantially.
The Company has always exhibited high level of concern for society in order to be a good corporate citizen. The Company has placed high importance to the community around its area of business and has implemented several community development and environment - friendly initiatives in Dahanu in association with the local Govt. bodies as well as NGOs. Though the initiatives have been focusing the areas of healthcare, education and civic amenities, water conservation initiatives as agro related issues are of major concern for Company. Some of the prominent initiatives till now taken by the Company in the area of water supply and water conservation are listed below :
- The Company has provided 75 bore wells in 33 villages in water starved surrounding villages of Dahanu.
- Repaired existing old and damaged check dams.
- Actively participated in construction of ten small temporary water check dams 'Vanarai Bandhara' in surrounding areas.
